September is definitely a time to renew your enthusiasm. Many of us in the business world have adopted the BNI’s (Business Network International) “Beyond” theme for 2025. Going Beyond requires extra focus, determination and strength. It means going out of the ordinary and doing something special. It demands a fierce dedication to your values, meaning and purpose. It’s what it takes to have a legendry marriage or an epic business. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles “I’ll Try Something New” describes the dedication my late husband and I had for each other. It was something palpable that inspired other couples to devote more energy to their marriage.
How Are You Going Beyond?
Success in business requires the same courage to go Beyond the average. It’s wanting your customers to be delighted, not just satisfied. It demands shaping a culture in your business (or in your home) to constantly be looking for new ways to deliver superior products or services. It’s easier to garner the energy to go Beyond now that we are going into Fall. September is the transition between Summer and Fall. We had a needed rest in August and now it’s time to go full throttle. Even my horses know it’s Fall! When I let them out, they gallop into the field instead of walking aimlessly.
How Could You Delight the People in Your Life?
It’s time for us to run into an open field of abundance and new possibilities. Motivate yourself by having mentors to look up to and learn from. My business mentors are Dr. Ivan Misner, founder of BNI, and Michael Gerber, business guru and author of “The E-Myth Revisited.” Study your mentors and emulate them. My husband and I had mentors in our church that we admired and imitated, such as Charles and Joyce Woods, Billie and Beverly Henry, and Shirley and Edward Edwin. Your spiritual mentors can be virtual, living or deceased. Some of my living mentors are Joyce Meyer, T.D. Jakes and Robert Mitchell (owner of Kwik Dry Restoration). Some deceased mentors are Willie Banks, Juan Diego, Tommy Ellison, and my father, TK Richardson.
Who is Your Guiding Light?
The reason I am talking about mentors is that we will need someone or something to turn to when we get discouraged. When you decide to go Beyond, you will encounter obstacles. Joyce Meyer always said, “New Level: New Devil.” As a business coach, I advise my clients to anticipate obstacles so they can plan for them. When problems arise, it is best to draw from the wisdom of your mentors. Work on identifying mentors for your personal, business, and spiritual life. Sometimes you can get the support you need just by listening to a song or reading about someone who overcame the same challenge that you are facing now.
What Challenges Will You Face?
One way to go Beyond is to brainstorm with likeminded people you respect. This is a way to develop new and unique approaches to various aspects of your business. This is why I treasure my BNI associates. Amanda Torbet, owner of Serenity Solutions Bookkeeping (417-401-1937), exemplifies someone who has really gone Beyond and wants to take her teammates with her. Amanda has stepped up to leadership roles as secretary of both the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce and Referrals Faster 2.0 (our BNI group). Recently, she has lead our Business-to-Business Power Team. After brainstorming with Amanda, I was able to identify new ways to move my businesses forward. Amanda, herself, has done an excellent job of building systems and procedures to deliver the customized service that she offers her clients.
